Q. What was the AREDS 2 trial?
A. The AREDS 2 trial was a 5 year study designed to test whether the original AREDS formula could be improved upon. The AREDS 2 trial was conducted by the National Eye Institute. More than 4,000 people, ages 50 to 85, who were at risk for advanced macular degeneration participated in the study.
Q. What is the difference between the AREDS and AREDS 2 formula?
A. Unlike the AREDS formula, the AREDS 2 formula replaced beta-carotene with lutein and zeaxanthin. Lutein and zeaxanthin was shown to provide better protective benefits against advanced macular degeneration while also being safe for both smokers and non-smokers. It is important to note that the AREDS formula is not the same as the AREDS 2 formula.
Q. Who should take the AREDS 2 formula?
A. Macular degeneration patients who are at high risk of progression to the advanced stages of the disease should consider taking the AREDS 2 formula after consulting with their physician.
Q. Will the AREDS 2 formula prevent macular degeneration?
A. No. Currently there is not any therapy that has been proven to prevent macular degeneration.
Q. Why 3mg of Copper?
A. While the antioxidants and zinc may help prevent vision loss from macular degeneration, the sole purpose of copper is to prevent copper deficiency that may be associated with taking high amounts of zinc. Research suggests having a 25:1 ratio of zinc to copper can help offset the potential for a copper deficiency without adding too much copper.
Q. Can I take Visionary’s AREDS 2 formula together with a multi-vitamin?
A. Yes, nine out of ten patients studied in the AREDS 2 trial took a multivitamin. You should consult with your physician before starting a new vitamin regimen.
Q. Why do I need to take Visionary’s AREDS 2 formula when I take a multivitamin?
A. A multivitamin alone does not contain the specific levels of vitamins and minerals that a macular degeneration patient requires. Nor should Visionary’s AREDS 2 formula replace taking a multivitamin.
